Davy Lazar is a trumpet player, composer, and improviser living in Brooklyn, NY. Since moving from Detroit in 2017, he's been carving a formidable reputation as an unyielding & unique creative presence regarding both improvisational and compositional voice.
His compositions have been described as "very rhythmically/harmonically/conceptually satisfying", and will be described right now as: riddled with small details of self-reference and logical mutation, utilizing a full scope of slippery rhythmic grids, which accumulate in an amorphous mass of unpredictable, yet undeniably clear, energy. Improvisationally, this approach translates to explosive ideas that "far outstrip typical trumpet material... with an extremely personal sound capable of a wide array of expression."
Davy currently leads two working ensembles, Davy Lazar Trio (with Matt Mitchell & Kate Gentile), and Pluto's Lawyer (trumpet/drums duo, also with Kate).
In addition to bands he leads, he's also a member of Matt Mitchell & Kate Gentile's co-led ensemble Snark Horse (w Irabagon, Gerstein, Maneri, Seabrook, Mendoza, Nelson, Cass).
